Obesity causes brain death—a life-threatening danger.

30 September 2025

A patient, only 27 years old, presented with left-sided hemiparesis (weakness on one side), a key symptom of ischemic stroke. Upon diagnosis, it was discovered that the primary cause leading to this condition was obesity.

Ischemic Stroke is considered a highly severe disease that can occur in people of all ages, even in young adults under 45 years old. In this case study, the patient is only 27 years old, presenting with left-sided hemiparesis, which is a major characteristic symptom of ischemic stroke.

Upon diagnosis, it was found that the primary cause leading to this condition was obesity, which is a major risk factor for both stroke and heart disease combined. This patient had hyperlipidemia (high blood cholesterol) and high visceral fat accumulation, which caused inflammation of the arterial walls supplying blood to the brain, ultimately resulting in vascular narrowing and blockage.

Of particular concern is that the patient had Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). This condition is clearly linked to the occurrence of stroke because the body repeatedly lacks oxygen during sleep, causing blood vessels to degenerate and increasing the chance of blood clot formation. If left untreated, it may lead to recurrent ischemic stroke and subsequent severe neurological symptoms.

In this case, it was fortunate for the patient to receive timely treatment through mechanical thrombectomy (surgery to remove the blood clot), which helped reduce the severity of brain death. However, some weakness still remains after the treatment, reflecting that although the treatment saved a life, the impact on physical capacity persists.

Therefore, the most important thing is prevention, especially among individuals who are overweight or obese. Taking care of health is highly essential, including:

  • Controlling weight within the normal range

  • Reducing fat and sugar intake in the diet

  • Controlling blood pressure, diabetes, and blood lipids

  • Exercising regularly

  • Screening for and treating obstructive sleep apnea

This case study serves as a reminder that stroke does not only happen in the elderly, but can occur even in young adults, especially those with obesity. Prevention by taking care of your health early on is therefore vital to avoid long-term loss of life and quality of life.... Don't forget to take care of your health.
