Mounjaro vs Wegovy: Which Weight Loss Medication Works Better?
Today, weight loss is no longer just about eating less and exercising more. Medications have become part of the conversation, and the two names most often discussed are Mounjaro and Wegovy.
The Starting Point: Why Are They Being Compared?
Both Mounjaro (tirzepatide) and Wegovy (semaglutide) are used in specialist clinics to support weight management alongside dietary changes and regular exercise. However, until recently, there had not been a clear head-to-head comparison of which one leads to greater weight loss. That changed with a recent study directly comparing the two medications in people with obesity who did not have type 2 diabetes.
A Clear Difference in Results
The study found that people using Mounjaro lost nearly 20% of their body weight on average, while those using Wegovy lost about 14%. In addition, waist circumference in the Mounjaro group was reduced by about 5 centimeters more, which is considered a meaningful difference.
Why Is Mounjaro More Effective?
Both medications work in a similar way by mimicking the hormone GLP-1, which is normally released after eating and helps the brain recognize that the body is full, leading to reduced food intake. However, Mounjaro has an added advantage because it mimics two hormones, GLP-1 and GIP, giving it a stronger effect on appetite control through more than one pathway.
What About Side Effects?
Regardless of which medication is used, the most common side effects are similar, including nausea, constipation, and diarrhea. In this study, the discontinuation rate was around 6% for Mounjaro and 8% for Wegovy, which is not considered a major difference.
Limitations to Consider Before Deciding
Although the findings are interesting, the study does have some limitations. For example, it was not a “blind” study, meaning participants knew which medication they were receiving, which may have influenced the weight loss results. In addition, the participants were selected based on specific criteria, with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 and above if accompanied by related health conditions. This means the results may not apply to everyone. Most importantly, there is still no clear evidence that Mounjaro reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease more than Wegovy, although greater weight loss may help indirectly.
A Simple Summary
For people with obesity who do not have diabetes and are ready to make serious changes to diet and exercise, Mounjaro may be the option that leads to greater weight loss than Wegovy. However, the final decision should depend on each individual’s overall health, ability to tolerate side effects, and budget, and should always be made carefully together with a physician.
